Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), is located just west of Arusha and serves as a spectacular backdrop to the city. The mountain is part of Arusha National Park and lies within the Mount Meru National Park, which covers approximately 1,470 km². It features diverse habitats ranging from savannahs and forests to alpine zones, providing trekkers and nature lovers with both scenic beauty and wildlife encounters.
Mount Meru is an excellent alternative or acclimatization climb for those attempting Mount Kilimanjaro, as it offers challenging trails without the extreme altitude. The mountain is less crowded than Kilimanjaro, giving visitors a more intimate and serene trekking experience. Its lush forests, volcanic features, and panoramic views of the northern plains and Kilimanjaro itself make it a must-visit for adventure travelers.
Mount Meru supports a rich variety of wildlife. The lower slopes are home to elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and monkeys, while the forested areas shelter blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and various bird species. Leopards and other predators occasionally roam the forested zones.
